The Life Cycle of Kids' Art (at least mine) AND "Finding the Funny"

I can tell just by looking at you that this never happens to you. I am willing to bet that you save every last piece of artwork your kid has ever created for you. You have them all filed in a file drawer in your home office.  Weekly you go through them and write sweet notes about what your child's milestones were at the moment they drew, painted, chalked, colored, markered or penciled the masterpiece before you. Trying to really  make your child's artwork stretch and bless others, you have even made several placemats out of them for family members. Those images not made into placemats have been either framed for your home, framed for family members or made into a calendar that you give to all of your extended family. Those that remain in the file folders are regularly visited and beamed upon.

You have never thrown a single piece of art created by your child in the trash can ever. In fact, the thought repulses you and you are having serious reservations even being on this blog at all because you fear I am going to suggest doing just that. You are very tempted and thiiiiiiiiiis close to just moving on to the next post on your list. If you are sticking around it's because you want to see how the others half of humanity lives. The half that actually throws away a piece of work created by their very own child for their parent's enjoyment. Work that has been disregarded and placed in a pile of GARBAGE. You. Are. Sick. About it.

I thank you for reading this far.

With the exception of a handful of pieces of artwork that I keep in a box for each child each year, this is generally...

THE LIFE CYCLE OF KIDS' ART
(At least mine)

*You play dumb 2nd time around. And also 3rd. You get better at hiding with each repetition. Eventually, your kid wears you down and you give up. Your entire house then becomes covered in artwork, family tells you to can it with the artwork gifts and you appear on an episode of Hoarders.

**Said while shaking off banana pieces (the 2nd time around).

(Please don't hold this whole art issue against me. I "ooo" and "ahhh" in a really sweet and in an as-sincere-as-possible voice. Does that help at all?)

I save things, of course, but can't keep it all. Sometimes my 4yo will scribble on the back page of a sheet of scrap paper (yeah) and want me to keep it... I mean.. you *have to throw some away. Your heart knows what to keep. But be a ninja about the things not to par. :) That's how I do it, anyway.

That is the exact same life cycle for art MY house has, except sometimes I actually snap a picture of it before it "disappears". We'd be swimming in art otherwise because I have very prolific children.

I've got a couple of the more interesting artwork displayed (like the painting Miss 2 did that looks like a hand doing the finger), but the rest is discretely filed in the bin. Sometimes I'll take photos of it beforehand if I'm in a 'Mum of the Year' mood.

Hahahah! Hilarious. My daughter is not old enough to be making art work but when she is, you better believe I will NOT be keeping every last "masterpiece". I better make sure my garbage cans are well-lined with banana peels.

I am a hopeless saver of artwork. I try to throw some of it away, but with limited success. My hubby on the other hand would throw it out as soon as the child's back is turned. Between the two of us we manage to save enough, and throw enough out so our house isn't taken over by crayon drawings.

Love - LOVE - the graphic. The cycle is the same at my house, unless said artwork features glitter, marshmallows or other food items, or nothing more than two crayon streaks. Those go straight in the Garbage Gallery. They'll thank me someday when their art collection is passed on to them and they don't have to build an addition onto their houses.

The twins are only two and I'm sorry to disappoint you, but their artwork isn't very good, as I'm sure you wanted to buy some of it. Unfortunately, most of it has found the trashcan already. I'm a terrible mother. Luckily, they don't know that yet.

This exact thing happened to a friend of mine. Her daughter, like only 2 at the time, if that, looked in the trash and looked at her mom and said, "My art?......" so pitiful!

There is a simple solution to this problem (I have employed it successfully for many years). You tell your child how much you love it and put it in your bag to take it to work with you. Then you throw it away when you get to the office.
Or, if you don't work at home, you sneak it into your bag and throw it away the next time you go out without your child.
Or, if you never go anywhere with your child, you send it work with your spouse.

Oh my goodness, I have missed you!! I read somewhere (probably Pinterest...this is a very Pinterest-y type thing) that you can take photos of their artwork and, like, make a big piece of art out of them and blah, blah, blah...I'm too lazy for all that!

Ha! I'm totally cracking up right now because I just described my blog to someone like this: My blog is LESS about how to swaddle your baby properly and MORE about not feeling guilty when your child's artwork "accidentally" falls in the trash.

I LOVED the drawing by the way. Ironically, I have a bunch that look just like it... well ... somewhere around here ... in that, um, landfill, by my house.

Another solution is to give them away as gifts. Who is going to object to getting something that one of your children hand made? And your kids will still think their art is special.

Not only are you going to be able to get rid of piles of artwork, you're also going to save a fortune on gift buying. Win win!

Bless you. Next time (happening right now) that I fold their masterpieces into tiny rectangles and push them under two weeks of torn cereal boxes , I will think of you and sigh with relief. The first can out the door - the paper recycling basket. It's a world of pain out my door, every week. I think the garbage man knows. We exchange knowling nods through the half open blinds.

I went all Supermom a few years ago and framed The Cherubs artwork in the basement. A couple dozen frames proudly display the highlights of their seven year old and four year old years. I vowed to change out the artwork in the frames every month.

Supermom that I am, I haven't changed a goshdarned THING in four years and my children are up in arms as they fear that those pieces appear as reflections of their CURRENT artistic abilities. #CantWin

I think my parents STILL have pieces of my artwork filed in the fireproof file cabinet. And I'm 30!

We were JUST talking about this today! My daughter told me that Lola (of Charlie and Lola fame) told her mother that they were gonna need a bigger (or aNOTHER)fridge {for the ridiculous amount of...work, and we may want to look into one as well.

My children can never see this blog to know that there are parents out there that don't throw artwork away. :) Ellen

This is great and I can't wait to re-post it! Did you read the survey about parents feeling guilty about throwing their kids’ drawings away? http://www.happydoodles.com/blogs/news/6180998-survey-parents-feeling-guilty-about-ditching-childrens-artwork

I've been known to take old kids art to a public dumpster after one kid found theirs under the banana peel.
