What were YOUR 80's Made Of?

I got lucky.

I wrote a silly tweet about Tears for Fears that went like this:
"Know what Tears for Fears? Everybody DOESN'T want to rule the world, so why don't you quit acting like you know everything?"
An editor for Nickelodeon had just read her friend's tweet about Tears for Fears moments earlier and did a search on Twitter for others who may have been talking about the 80's group.

She saw mine.

This is what USED to think of when
 I thought of Nickelodeon.
She read through some more of my tweets and then clicked over to my blog.  She then sent me an e-mail to ask if I would be interested in writing for their website, "ParentsConnect".

Many of you already heard me talking about this yesterday on Facebook and Twitter, so please forgive me for blabbing about it here on the blog.  I was just so dang EXCITED when I saw that something I had written finally went on-line.  If you have not read it already, you can click HERE to read my "Boozy Baby Names" list.  The topic for that post was given to me by them.  I know booze and babies don't often go together.  Well, I guess many have babies due to booze.  Am I right or am I right or am I right or am I right?

So, that's that.

Now there's this:

That is my sister, Lisa, and me in 1985.  I am in 5th grade and my sister is in 1st.  Notice, my sister is younger than me and is NOT the one carrying the Cabbage Patch Kid to school. (Her name was Kathleen Barbie!  May she rest in peace!)  This was also about the time that I was obsessed with Nickelodeon's show "You Can't Do That On Television" and 80's music, like Tears for Fears.  They released their album "Songs From The Big Chair" containing the song I referenced in my tweet, "Everybody Wants To Rule The World", in 1985.  I knew every word to most of the songs on that album.  I know.  Big surprise.  Look at those glasses and those DUCKS on my VEST!

Tears for Fears, Nickelodeon, Cabbage Patch Kids, You Can't Do That On Television and Home Interiors (see below) are just some of the things my 80's were made of...

What were YOUR 80's made of?

Today's Juice In The City Deal

NOT 1980's Home Interiors...
Besides hearing about Tears for Fears in the 1980's, I also heard about Home Interiors parties A LOT.  My mom was always going to one or we were cleaning our house for one.  Home Interiors, Home Interiors, Home Interiors. I felt like they were taking over the world one knick-knack and one wicker-made something or other at a time. A friend's mom sold Home Interiors and she had a garage FULL of Home Interiors jazz. It was like a stinkin' mall in there, except there was no Food Court and no 5-7-9. I looked for both and I was completely SICK to come up empty on that one. Thankfully, if you want REALLY nice and affordable decorations for your home, you can make your way over to The Magnolia House right now in the Fort Bend area for 50% of $20 worth of merchandise. That is an awesome deal!  Click here to get yours.

I married a woman with three children in 1983 so my 80's were all about unlearning everything I thought I knew about responsibility. I wish I could remember a soundtrack, but I think I pretty much gave up music for the news. In retrospect that was probably a mistake.

Congrats on the Nick writing gig--that is FABULOUS. I'll try to pretend I'm not jealous.

the 80's...

multi-colored scrunchy socks
Wham, Michael Jackson, & Madonna
fighting for Guess jeans
gummi bears & friendship bracelets
Cabbage Patch Kids & Kid Video
Girl Scout camping
my first bra
bad perms & braces

I'm so glad the 80's are in the past...

Cheers.

Oh, so with you on "You Can't Do That on Television". I watched that show religiously.

Hmm.. Hypercolor T-Shirts, My Little Pony, Beetlejuice (the movie AND the animated series), those weird plastic T-Shirt clips, and slap bracelets.

I'm so proud of you, my friend. Congratulations!

My 80's were primarily composed of neon colored clothing, synthesized music, and stickers.

Very cool, and a great choice on their part. Love your 80's picture!

My 80's were full of awkwardly short shorts on a tall, skinny body, popped collars, pinch-rolled jeans, and never ever being cool enough. :)

My mother SOLD Home interiors! The boxes were everywhere. They took over our living room and dining room. That stuff was NOT cool.

In the eighties I had big hair, big glasses and baggy sweaters. Make that baggy, ugly sweaters. What were we thinking!?!

Oh my talk about a flashback from the past.

Oh the innocence of taking a cabbage patch doll to school. :)

I was all about Madonna in the 80's although I loved Tears for Fears. Hmm...skinny gold belts, leg warmers, clogs, big hair, flavored lip gloss, and the Flashdance look which also was the Jane Fonda Workout look so it was double duty.

My husband LOVES Tears for Fears. No joke. He spends hours downloading their music.

Mine were filled with smut, like Flowers in the Attic and raunchy Mad Libs.

My '80's were about living in Switzerland as a single girl, moving to Nashville, going to grad school, meeting, falling in love with, and marrying my then-future husband. Good times!

Sorry. I missed the 80's. I was too drunk.

Congrats on your new gig. That is totally awesome!

Also, I used to LOVE that show, "You can't do that on television"

And my eighties were made up of very tall 'wall bangs'.

those ducks are amazing. what were we thinking back then??? we must have graduated the same year because you were in 5th grade in 85 and i was too! i can always remember because the second number of the year was the grade i was in.

i had a cabbage patch but i was a little too old for it. it's name was krispin joyce. all i could think of was rice krispies. my mother kept telling me it was a girl. i kept telling her it was a boy. i hated that doll because i wanted a cute girl one and it was a boy.

never liked you can't do that on television. my sisters liked it and once we moved into the 20th century where we live and got cable, we finally got nickelodeon so we watched it a lot. i just didn't like it!

Sparkling said... [Reply]

oh, i'm back. i'm proud to say that the first cassette tape that i owned, in 1983, was Men At Work, Business As Usual. yeah, it was a great time.

I had TWO Cabbage Patch kid's that fell off of the back of a truck and into my grandparents shady hands. Both blond, boy girl. Samantha Kelly (I think) and Robert Lee (I know).

I lived for You Can't Do That on Televison.

Otherwise, my 80s were made up of puberty.

My brother-in-law named one of my nephews Jameson Harp...That's two boozie baby names.

I love the glasses & vest but we must part ways on the cabbage patch creature. Yes I was a decade older than you but I used to just watch in amazement as people would fall all over themselves trying to get one of these weird dolls. Thanks for the fractured memories! W.C.C.

Congrats on the Nick gig! What fun!

The 80s were about MTV! I went to college at a very small conversative private university and my class was the first to be allowed to have MTV in our dorm rooms! We felt like we had conquered the world with our petition.

I miss those oversize sweatshirts and leggings. My girlfriends and I did not go out in public without "butt cover," and we didn't even have butts back then.

Here I was thinking I was some sort of bigshot because of my elderly post today and then I come over here and you are all some sort of professional and all. You win.

My 80's were all about Garbage Pail Kids, Muscle Men, Karate Kid and the Never Ending Story.

Kelley, seriously congrats again on getting published by them. I'm so excited for you and slightly envious! I do believe I owed that beautiful powder blue sweater your wearing - NICE!

It only takes 1 click! yay!
My 80s were made of iron-curled bangs - 1/2 forward, 1/2 backward; Vuarnet tops and Micheal Jackson. Ohh yeah!

Kristin said... [Reply]

I loved You Can't Do That On Television. By far one of the greatest shows from our generation!

OH MY! I had that same vest! Well, sort of. Mine was red with dogs on it. I HAVE to dig up the pic & I'll send it over. My 80's were filled with "homemade" Cabbage Patch Kids. *sigh. Yes, apparently my mom wasn't one of the 80 thousand parents standing in line Toys R Us at 2 am.
Heading over to Nickelodeon now! Exciting news!!!

Julie said... [Reply]

Not just ducks on a sweater...

...ducks on a vest.

And you're carrying a Cabbage Patch Doll?

So. Beyond. Awesome.

But I'm thinking your little sister might still be winning.

She's got giraffes on her shirt AND she looks to be carrying an umbrella.

Even though it isn't raining.

Fabulous doesn't begin to cover this picture...

Love.

ACK!!

I did a post on the 80's last night. 2 a.m.

Just so you know.

Well, great minds and all.

Loved the 80's,such extremes.

Tiffany said... [Reply]

so awesome for you! congratulations!

my 80's were spent watching Jem and playing with My Little Pony. Def. not trying to rule the world.

You think that's bad? My 80's? Rick. Astley.

Goodness.

Congrats on the awesome gig. You are one deserving woman.

Kathleen Barbie? PLEASE tell me that if you had that doll today, you would rename her Kathleen Barbleen?
(You could add her to your list then!)

What a cool post: a salute to the 80s complete with childhood pic, Tears for Fears reference and iconic toy.

This is what bloggers strive to do!

You do have the funniest tweets in the twitter universe.

Big time congratulations! You will be awesome in your new writing gig.

And I'm sadly, older than you. I was a teen and then in my 20's so my decade was a blur of permed hair, many beers, Journey, The Go-Go's, U2 and lots of other nonsense we won't speak of.

I'm so excited for you! The power of Twitter, baby. Rock On!

Does this mean I virtually know someone famous?

And my room was two words: Depeche Mode.

My 80's loved Garbage Pail Kids, Madonna, Paula Abdul, and Def Leppard. I was pretty eclectic, and I figured if I kept my options open, I may be asked to be in a music video. Seriously, I wrote letters to all of them telling them I was a really good dancer. Not sure if my mother mailed them or not.

Copyboy said... [Reply]

My 80s had much of the same, except I was really awkward and into star Wars and Joust. You should visit fourth grade nothing. She has lots of posts like this.

ISRAEL CARRASCO said... [Reply]

To me the 80's was all about WWF wrestling and arcades and wild hair.

80's

I did not like the 80's. As far as I can remember anyway. And I wanted a CPK but we couldn't get one so my mom made me one. What a knock off POS. She tried, though :p

Congrats on the gig, girl

I am concerned about you carrying a Cabbage Patch Doll, but considering I wore a sign listing my street address for the bus driver, I shouldn't cast stones.

XLMIC said... [Reply]

This is so sweet! I was old already in the 80's ... well, older than YOU :P like, in college and then some. My 80's were made of beer, Jack D., lots of rowing and lots of sex. The music went along for the ride.

Congratulations on the tweet leading to fame and fortune! That's fantastic.
